The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is in charge of regulating and overseeing civil aviation in India. DGCA Class 2 Medicals are compulsory medical examinations to check if a pilot is fit to operate an aircraft. These medical certificates are given to pilots who want to fly non-commercial aircraft. Class II medical is the first step for a pilot’s career and is necessary to obtain a Student Pilot License and join a flying school. You must be at least 16 years old to apply for class 2 medicals. Here’s a simple guide to apply for class 2 medicals:
Step 1: Register on eGCA (e-Governance of Civil Aviation (eGCA)).
If you’re already registered, proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Go to this link and find a suitable doctor from the list of DGCA examiners based on your location. Contact the doctor to schedule an appointment. The doctor will provide you with a list of documents needed for the medical exam. Make sure to only get your medicals done by the approved doctor, or it won’t be valid. <https://www.dgca.gov.in/digigov-portal/?page=jsp/dgca/InventoryList/personal/medical/class2/Class2.pdf>
Step 3: The medical exam will include various tests such as
If your BMI is not proportional, additional tests may be required.
However, it is recommended to do some additional tests which are required for Class I Initial such as
These additional tests will ensure your medical status more comprehensively and will help during the Class I Medical.
Important: All tests must be done at NABL/NABH certified laboratories; otherwise, DGCA will not consider it a genuine Class 2 Medical. Some doctors may have their own clinic for the tests, but if not, make sure to get them from NABL/NABH certified laboratories before visiting the class 2 medical examiner. Please note that the medical reports must have a barcode / QR code for verification.
Step 4: Once the doctor approves all your reports, they will upload and sign it on eGCA for approval. If your medical test results are normal, the doctor will issue a CA35 form on the same day, confirming that you are fit. You can start your training flights with a CA35 only.
Step 5: Once your medical documents reach DGCA, they will prepare a file with your name, and you will receive a file number. After 30-45 days, you will receive a medical assessment on eGCA, which will allow you to apply for class 1 medical. You can download it by logging in with your ID and password on eGCA.
The validity of CA-35 is 90 days. In case the assessment is not issued by then, please contact the appropriate authority at <[email protected]>
Cost of class 2 medicals (Class 2 Medical Cost in India): If the medical is done at air force hospitals, it will cost around 4000 to 5000 Rs. If done at approved private hospitals, it will cost around 6000 to 10000 Rs.
Validity of class 2 medicals: 24 months.
Remember, all these tests are just to ensure you’re in good health to take on the skies. Stay positive, and I’m sure you’ll glide through them with flying colors! You got this!
